Harps for Curragh – Friday night 7.30pm KO

27/1/2012: Curragh Athletic FC (Select) v Finn Harps

A Curragh Athletic selection will play Finn Harps in a pre- season opener for the League of Ireland club as Felix Healy prepares his squad for the 2012 campaign. The local side will field a mixture of Curragh players with manager Shaun Carlin expected to draft in a few guest players for the match. A large crowd is expected as this will be Harps first game locally since last season. Kick off is 7.30pm.

Superb Barclay strike gives Curragh victory

22012112: Donegal League:  St Catherines 0   Curragh Athletic 1

A superb second half strike form Shane Barclay give Curragh all three points in this very important top four game played in Killybegs. Ten points now from twelve in our last four games, all on the road, has brought Shaun Carlin’s forces right back into the promotion mix. This was a great game of football and although Curragh had to withstand some very good efforts from the home side especially in the first half including a fine first-half save by Roy Duffy, the winning goal was one that deserved to win any match. The goal came about when Paddy Cullen took the ball down the left to the by-line before picking out Barclay just outside the box and his first time shot flew into the net giving the home keeper no chance. In fact, Barclay almost doubled the lead ten minutes later when his effort clipped the wrong side of the crossbar and went over. But this was a fine team performance again with man of the match Mickey O Brien, Roy Duffy and Emmet Mc Nulty outstanding in defence while Doherty, Moore, Mc Cullagh and Bates in midfield worked hard, and again top scorer Shane Barclay managing the all important goal.

21012012: Donegal Schoolboys: No Luck for under 16’s in East Final.
The under 16 team lost out very unlucky in the final of the East Donegal under 16 Final on Saturday last. The match was dominated largely by Curragh who had two shots come back off the woodwork and numerous other shots go narrowly wide. However, the season has not ended yet with the team now playing Eany Celtic in another semi-final on Saturday in the Europa Cup. With home advantage, we have a good chance of making another final. Best of luck to all involved.

21012012: Donegal Schoolboys: Under 12’s come good at home to Drumkeen Utd.

The under 12 team followed up their previous weeks drubbing of Deele Harps to record another 4 – 1 victory over Drumkeen Utd at the Curragh. Leading one nil at the break, they ran out easy winners in a second half completely dominated by the home side. Well done to all involved.

15012012: Barclay rescues Curragh in Raphoe

Donegal League:  Raphoe Town  1  Curragh Athletic 1

Shane Barclay scored a deserved second half equaliser for Curragh in a very close match against near neighbours Raphoe Town. The home side has taken the lead mid way through the first half when Frankie Mc Brearty found the net with a shot which came off a defender following a corner. Curragh began the match well and dominated largely for the first twenty minutes with Renato and Daniel O Brien coming close, but as the half progressed, the home side began to get more into the game with Emmet Mc Nulty having to clear off the line following another corner. The second half equaliser came about after great work from Daniel O Brien who managed to keep the ball in at the by line, before picking out Barclay with a pass and the latter kept his cool to slide the ball home from six yards. All in all, this was a another good result having also collected three points last week away to Cappry Rovers, keeps us well in contention.

08012012: Donegal League – Curragh move up to 3rd on Table

Cappry Rovers          2          Curragh Athletic 4

Curragh started where we finished before the Christmas break with another fine win away from home this time against local rivals Cappry Rovers. Three first half goals from Shane Barclay, Mark Doherty and Eddie Moore cancelled out a lead goal from the home side after ten minutes and although they home side pulled back a goal before the break, Dan O Brien sealed the win when he cleverly finished when through on goal. Another fine win lifts us into third in the table and with an away game in Raphoe next week the season is now beginning to heat up for Sean Carlin’s men.

Merry Christmas from Curragh Athletic FC

Christmas 2011 sees Curragh well placed in senior and 16’s

Senior: Christmas 2011 sees Curragh move into the top four for the first time this season following their one nil away victory with Gweedore Utd recently. This is a good achievement for Sean Carlin and his players following their shaky start to the league campaign. Reaching the area final of the Sportsman’s Cup was another good achievement and the team now go into 2012 challenging for promotion.

Cup Final and Champions League for 16’s?: Curragh excelled in both competitions with Jonny Mc Bride and his forces now second in the league and are also through to the final of the cup. With one game left to play in the league against Raphoe Town, they only require a draw to secure a Champions League place. In the cup final, they face Ballybofey Utd with the likely venue being Convoy Arsenal. Curragh go into the final with confidence, however although they beat Ballybofey by six goals to two at home and followed this up with a fine two nil victory away, they also know that this will be a tough game and will have to be at their best to lift the cup for their second year running. The initial date for this final was set for the 16th December 2011. However the DSL decided to postpone the game following an appeal by Ballybofey Utd to the Fai against an earlier decision of the SFAI. Ballybofey Utd had failed in their initial appeal to the SFAI against a decision of the DSL to suspend 3 of their players for violent conduct, ironically after the final whistle at the Curragh home game. The game will now played in the new year.

Under 12: The under 12’s have now finished pre-Christmas league campaign and await the fixture for the restructured format in the new year. In the cup, they travel to Drumkeen Utd on Wednesday next.

11122012: George’s goal delight for 10 man Curragh

Gweedore Utd  0              Curragh Athletic   1

A George Bates wonderful strike drilling the ball home from twenty yards after only twelve minutes, was enough for Curragh to record their second consecutive win on the road. But it was a tough game with the home side pushing Curragh all the way. The first half saw Curragh’s dominated largely, however it took Conor Mc Nulty to make a timely tackle on eighteen minutes and Roy Duffy also saved well a while later. The second half saw the home side come more into it but with Michael O Brien and Roy Duffy outstanding, they found it hard to get any progress. Eddie Moore, Shane Barclay and Mark Doherty were well organised in midfield and matched anything that came their way. But it was a close fifteen minutes as Curragh were reduced to ten men on seventy four minutes and began to hang on a bit, but with Roy Duffy outstanding for Curragh, it was Renato who almost grabbed a second for Curragh on eighty seven minutes. Well done to all concerned, with nine points from the  last three games lifting us up to fourth, credit goes to Shaun Carlin and his players.

04122011:Donegal League. Barclay double gives Curray away win

Curragh Athletic FC 2  Donegal Town FC 1

Curragh Athletic reversed this fixture to Donegal Town and earned a well deserved victory with Shane Barclay netting another brace for the Finn Valley team. His first arrived on forty three minutes from the penalty spot after Conor Mc Nulty had been fouled in the box and he made it two nil on seventy two minutes when he scored from close range after good work from Mc Nulty and Lafferty. The first half was in fact dominated mostly by Curragh with George Woods, Mark Doherty and Emmet Mc Nulty all coming close to scoring. But in the second half Donegal Town began to come into the game with JP Byrne being moved up front after Curragh went two nil up. Donegal Town did manage to pull a goal back on eighty one minutes when a Declan Bruiser cross ended up in the net. For the last ten minutes, it was frantic at times with Curragh almost sealing the game with a third on at least two occasions, but the nearest effort came from Donegal Town when Kevin Deveeney drilled a great shot which came back off the upright. Donegal other best effort came from Shane Boyle when he hit a first time shot from all of forty yards, but somehow Roy Duffy got his hands to, to tip the ball around the post. Best for Curragh were Michael O Brien, Conor mc Nulty and Shane Barclay. Referee: Brian O Kane.

20112011:Donegal League

O Brien inspires Curragh

Curragh Athletic    2         Dunlewey Celtic               0

Curragh produced their best performance of the season to overcome a stubborn Dunlewey Celtic. And it took them only six minutes to take the lead when Jason Sweeney was fouled outside the box and his quick free kick caught Joey Rodden off guard from twenty yards. The home team continued to attack and Renato almost doubled the lead, but only for Rodden to deny at the expense of a corner. The game was played at a high tempo throughout with both sides attacking at every opportunity, But it was Curragh who were the more solid throughout especially in defence with man of the match Mickey O Brien and young Patrick Mc Colgan outstanding. Roy Duffy also played his part particularly with some outstanding catches. Brendan Mc Geedy and John Cannon tried hard for the visitors throughout, but when Michael O Brien’s powerful header from George Bates corner made it two nil on seventy four minutes, there were no way back for Dunlewey.

Liam O Meara saves the first of three peanties

Curragh Athletic 2  Raphoe Town 2 (Curragh won 4 – 1 on penalties)

It took a dramatic penalty shoot out for Curragh to book their place in this year’s under 16 Cup Final. And it took also a brilliant Liam O Meara to help them on their way saving three of the four penalties from Raphoe Town in the shoot-out. (for full report and photos see Teams U16)

05112011:DSL U12 East Division

Curragh Athletic    5         Deele Harps       2

Curragh’s young lads produced a great display to overcome Deele Harps in the East Donegal Schoolboys under 12 competition on Friday night last. Hero on the night for Curragh was Kyle O Mara who scored a hat trick, the first coming after only 30 seconds straight from the kick off. It was two nil after six minutes when Dylan Lafferty set up Darragh Gallagher to score. Then on twenty one minutes came the goal of the game when Tyla Mc Laughlin scored with a great shot from over twenty yards which gave the keeper no chance. It was then Kyle O Meara who scored his second after running through to score to make it four nil at the break. The second half saw Deele come more into the game and they managed to pull on back ten minutes into the second half when Michael Mc Curdy converted from the penalty spot. But soon after Kyle O Meara completed his hat-trick when he again ran through the defence to score. The final score of the game came from Deele Harps when Conor Lynch set up Cormack Mc Gettingan to score. This was a great team effort from both teams with Adam Cassidy, Dylan Lafferty and Jack Gillespie exception for Curragh along with hat-trick hero Kyle O Meara. Referee: Tara Catterson

30102011: Ulster Junior Cup - Narrow Defeat for Curragh in Ulster Cup

Monaghan Town 1 Curragh Athletic 0 (aet)

Curragh exited the Ulster Junior Cup by the narrowest of margins going down after conceding a goal in the dying minutes of extra-time. Played in Monaghan Town’s ground, who are the current Champions having won this cup in 2010/2011, this was again a good team effort and next week it’s back to League action with an away game in Rathmullen.

29102011: DSL U16 East Division. O Donnell and Carlin score in away win.

Ballybofey Utd  0  Curragh Athletic 2

Curragh kept their cool to record a great away win in Ballybofeyand maintain their top of the table status. Played in torrential rain conditions and at times a waterlogged pitch, the young players of Curragh adapted well to the conditions and showed tremendous skill when required to carve out two very well taken goals. The all important breakthrough came ten minutes before the break, when Ethan O Donnell raced on to a long clearance and right from the moment he controlled the ball, he set himself up brilliantly to place a low shot past the Ballybofey keeper into the far corner of the net. It was no more than the Curragh lads deserved and in the second half took control of the game. They sealed the win with fifteen minutes left when O Donnell again flicked on a pass to James Carlin and he again showed great composure in front of goals to draw the keeper and finish to the left of the goal. This was another good performance from Johnny Mc Brides team and credit to all players who played so well under the poor weather conditions.

26102011: Monaghan Trip for Curragh in Ulster Cup

Curragh will make the journey to Belgium Park to play Monaghan Town in the first round of the Ulster Junior Cup. Last years winners of the competition Monaghan Town will be stiff test for Shaun Carlins team, but they will travel confident having recorded a good victory over Convoy last Sunday. Best of luck to Shaun and his players. Kick off is 1.30pm.

Home win for Curragh over Convoy Arsenal in Donegal League

    23102011: Curragh Athletic 4  Convoy Arsenal 2

_notes/S Barclay-crop.JPG

Curragh collected all three points from this game against near neighbours Convoy Arsenal. Played in heavy conditions, it was the away side that started the brighter and they took the lead after only four minutes when Gary Doherty headed home a Cronin Kerrigan cross. But Curragh was level twelve minutes later when Shane Barclay set up Renato to drill home from just outside the eighteen. Curragh took the lead on twenty four minutes when Paddy Cullen was quickest after Conor Cairns could only parry Renato’s shot. Then on twenty nine minutes Convoy had the chance to equalise, but Ryan Carlin’s well placed penalty was brilliantly turned over the bar by Curragh keeper Roy Duffy. It was then to get worse for the away side as Shane Barclay got his first of the day after rounding keeper Cairns and scorning at the near post.

...........Two goal Shane Barclay.....

The second half was a close affair with Curragh almost doubling their lead on several occasions, but it was another header from Mark Mailey on seventy four minutes for the away side that reduced the lead. But the Curragh team stood firm and after Shane Barclay calmly finished to the net on seventy nine minutes, it was the home team that almost scored again with Cairns pulling off some good saves to keep the score at four two. Best for Convoy were Ryan Carlin and Conor Cairns, while Conor Mc Cullagh, Eddie Moore and Roy Duffy all having outstanding games for Curragh. Referee: Paddy Martin.

20102011 DSB U16 Cup:  Lafferty rescues Curragh with late show

Curragh Athletic 2       Convoy Arsenal 1

Two late goals from Travis Lafferty put Curragh through to the next round of the Donegal Schoolboys under 16 East Division Cup. Although, it was no more than the home side deserved, they trailed a spirited Convoy side for a lot of the game having went behind after a long free kick ended up in the back of the net in the first half. The home side pilled on the pressure particularly in the second half and just when it looked like Convoy could defend the lead, up popped Lafferty with a great finish to level the scoring. With confidence again restored and as extra time loomed, Curragh produced a fantastic team goal with that man again Lafferty producing a fine finish to ensure it was Curragh who will play Raphoe Town in the next round. Great team effort from all.

16102011: Barclay double not enough for Curragh

Curragh Athletic 2    Quigley’s Point Swifts           4

Two goals from Shane Barclay was not enough for Curragh in the Fai Junior Cup, as a well organised Inishowen side managed to hold on to progress to the next round. However, the home side will be a bit disappointed as they lead one nil at the break thanks to an eighteenth minute finish from Shane Barclay withy Michael O Brien also playing a big role in the goal. But within twenty minutes of the restart, the home team was three one down, the first from a header from Kevin Wallace, then a fine volley from Anthony Mc Glynn and another from the penalty spot by Paul Grant. But just when it looked all over, up popped Barclay again to cleverly finish to the net on seventy five minutes. The last fifteen minutes Curragh went in search of an equaliser, but another penalty on eighty nine minutes finished the game as a contest. Best for Curragh were Roy Duffy, Emmet Mc Nulty, Michael O Brien and Shane Barclay.

09102011: Barclay clinches home win

Curragh Athletic  2     Gweedore Utd   0

The home win was no more than Curragh deserved against a young looking Gweedore team. The breakthrough came thirteen minutes in when George Bates shot from outside the eighteen flew into the net off a defender. Shane Barclay and Renato both had good efforts saved by Cathal Gillespie in the Gweedore nets before the home side went two up on fifty one minutes when Shane Barclay thumped home a fine goal after been set up the Eddie Moore. Gweedore Utd did try to pull a goal back, but they found stand in keeper Michael Lafferty in fine form with Emmet Mc Nulty also very impressive at right back for Curragh. Lennon Mc Daid and Mark Doherty also had a good game for Curragh.

25/09/2011: Late goal denies Curragh young guns

A late equalising goal from Castlefin Celtic stopped Curragh Athletic from taking maximum points from their first three games in the East Division of the Donegal Schoolboys League. Having won their previous two outings, they again looked on course after Jason Mc Bride put them in front in Castlefin. However, this is a great start to their campaign, having beat Ballybofey Utd and Convoy Arsenal respectfully.

25/09/2011: Curragh 0 St Catherines 2

St Catherines collected all three points from their trip to Killygordon when they came out on top in a decent game played under difficult conditions. The first half hour was very even with both goalkeepers pulling off some good saves before Daniel Breslin open the scoring on thirty one minutes. The second half was a similar affair with the home team trying to get an equaliser, but as it turned out, it was the away side who scored aging in the eighty fourth minute when a corner taking by Steven Leslie somehow managed to find it way straight to the net. This was a good team effort from St Catherines with Michael O Brien outstanding for Curragh. Referee: Kevin Logue.

04092011: Donegal Schoolboys 1998 Squad at the Curragh

The Donegal Schoolboys 1998 team trained at the Curragh on Sunday with manager Eunan Brolly seeing for the first time some new players. This was a good workout for the young squad in preparation for the 2011 -2012 season including the National Inter League competitions and next year’s Galway Cup.

04092011: Curragh host under 10 Champions League Blitz

Curragh hosted the group stages of the Donegal Champions League on

Sunday with Donegal Town, Keadue Rovers, Cappry Rovers and Bonagee

Utd participating. A large crowd attended the event with lots of good football on

show from all four clubs. Well done to all players.

04092011: Curragh Athletic 0 Raphoe Town 5

Raphoe Town opened their season with an impressive five goal victory
over an under strength Curragh Athletic. A penalty on thirty one minutes
from Paddy Gallagher opened the scoring with the impressive David
Shovlin making it two three minutes later, David Craig added number
three on forty two before Shovlin added his second on forty five.
Emmet Kelly completed the scoring on seventy five minutes. For Curragh
who started with five of last week’s are final panel, they did have
some good efforts on goal, but they had no answer to man of the match
David Shovin. Best for Curragh was Conor Mc Cullagh and Michael O
Brien. Referee: Denis O Donnell.

28082011: 10 man Curragh lose out AET

Castelfin Celtic 3        Curragh Athletic 2

An extra time goal was one too much for 10 man Curragh after producing a tremendous comeback away to Castelfin Celtic. Having dominated the opening half hour without taking the lead, keeper Roy Duffy received a straight red card after he tried to block a certain goal for the home side. Although this was the home team’s real first chance, they then raced into a two goal lead in the second half against the 10 men. However, Curragh were not done yet and fought back brilliantly to equalise with goals from Shane Barclay and an eighty eight minute goal from Jason Sweeney. This was no more than they deserved as they continued to play football throughout and for long periods of the game were easily the better side. In the end, however, the extra man paid dividends for the home side. There was good performances from all players on the pitch and particular young Shane O Brien who played in nets after the red card. Well done to both teams.

24082011: Outstanding Curragh sees off Lifford to reach Area Final

Curragh Athletic 5    Lifford Celtic 1

In a pulsating game under the lights in Killygordon, Curragh turned in a great performance to progress to the area final thanks again to four second half goals. It took only four minutes for them to take the lead in the first half and a fine goal it was with George Bates splitting the Lifford defence with a good through ball for Shane Barclay to run onto and send a perfect shot to the far corner of the Lifford net. The remainder of the half, Lifford began to exert some pressure, but it was thirty minutes before Paul Colhoun tested the home keeper, with a rasper of a shot only for Roy Duffy to divert the shot for a corner. Michael Coyle then almost put the home side two up, but his header was just wide. In fairness to Lifford, they probably deserved to be level, and just on the stroke of half time, they did manage to equalise when a deflected shot hit the bottom of the post and there was Jason Mc Brearty to tap in from close range.

However, if Lifford had any ideas of having got a vital breakthrough, Curragh had different ideas with Michael O Brien thumping a free kick off the crossbar on forty seven minutes. Then on fifty one on minutes, Coyle played the perfect though ball for Renato to race onto and drive an unstoppable shot past Gerard Devine in the Lifford nets. Shane Barclay then hit the woodwork again on sixty minutes before Eddie Moore made it three one four minutes later. By now the home team were well in control, but it took a great save from Duffy to keep out Colhoun on seventy five minutes, before Glen Mc Daid extended the Curragh lead on eighty four minutes. Shane Barclay finished off the scoring with his second goal for Curragh three minutes later from close range to give the home team a fine result. This was a great team effort from all the Curragh players following on from a good away win on Sunday in Cappry. Lifford had good performances from Paul Colhoun and Gerard Devine. Referee: Paddy Martin

21082011: Curragh through after comfortable win in Cappry

Cappry Rovers 0        Curragh Athletic 4

Four second half goals enabled Curragh progress to the next round of the Sportsman’s Cup in a very comfortable win away from home. Jason Sweeney’s neat finish on forty seven minutes opened the scoring before Shane Barclay doubled the lead on fifty five minutes with a fine individual game. It was 3 – 0 on sixty minutes when Conor Mc Cullagh scored the goal of the game after his first time shot flew into the top corner after good play from George Woods. Jason Sweeney completed the scoring on seventy minutes with his second goal following a corner. This was a good opening game for a much changed looking Curragh team who had to play without the services of captain Michael O Brien. Man of the match was Curragh’s right back Emmet Mc Nulty.

Seamus in 2008 with Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni at the Club of the Year Awards

The Donegal Football League has awarded Curragh President Seamus Mc Kelvey with their “Lifetime Achievement Award” at their annual League Presentation night. The accolade is awarded to people who have made a lifetime contribution to their local club. Seamus, who is with the club now since its inception in 1971, played as goalkeeper for a long spell while also managing the club, not to mention running the club for many years. He was goalkeeper on the day the club won their first silverware back in 1974, clinching the title with a 3-2 away win at Arcade Athletic, now known as Bonagee Utd. He has kept a record of all games played and players who played in every match since the beginning. He also organised and ran the once time famous annual "Curragh Cup" as a fund raiser for the club. Nominated by the club, we wish to congratulate Seamus on this well deserved award.

Curragh Athletic 1 St Catherines 3

Despite dominating for long periods during this match, it was St Catherines from Killybegs who managed to bag all three points. Curragh had several good efforts on goal including three shots which came back off the crossbar, but some slack marking in defence allowed the fishermen to grab three first half goals. (see Match report –Seniors)

27032011: Late Sweeney strike seals win for Curragh

Curragh athletic        1          Drumbar        0

A superb goal from Jason Sweeney in added time gave Curragh a deserved win over Drumbar Utd at Killygordon. However, for a long period of the second half, it looked we were about to throw away two points after missing several good chances in a match that we largely dominated. From the start of the game, it was Curragh who took the initiative, and on eight minutes, Sweeney was through on goal, but seemed to be fouled just when he was about to score, but the referee was adamant despite the home team protests for a penalty. Brendan Boyle then had a long range shot just past the post, before Calvin Bradley set up Sweeney only for his shot to go wide of the post also. The first half continued with Drumbar defending in numbers and Curragh dominating. On fifty five minutes the move of the match saw Shane Barclay produce a great run down the left side and crossed to the back post for Sweeney to score what looked a certain goal, but again the ball went the wrong side of the post. As the game wore on,

Deele/IMG_0016-crop.JPG

Jason Sweeney who scored the winner against Drumbar.

Drumbar began to feel they were in with a chance and Brendan O Meara had to be alert on two occasions to keep a clean sheet. But in the final fifteen, the home side went all out with Barclay, Sweeney, Savlon, and Rafferty all coming close with the latter hitting the bar from a header. Just when it looked like a draw and players asking the referee how much time he was adding on, the ball fell to Sweeney just outside the box and his perfect volley nested in the bottom corner of the Drumbar net. Referee: Ed Moore.

27022011: Barclay double gives Curragh good away victory

Ballybofey Utd           0          Curragh Athletic FC   2

A goal in each half by Shane Barclay ensured an under strength Curragh Athletic came away with all three points from Ballybofey. The result was no more than Curragh deserved. With Jason Sweeney and Gerard Melaugh causing the Ballybofey side to defend quite a lot in the first half, Calvin Bradley rattled the crossbar before Mark Doherty’s shot flew past the right-hand of Eamon Mc Cauley’s post. Barclays first arrived on thirty six minutes when he outpaced the defence to slide home at the far post after a good through ball from Calvin Bradley. His second came in the eighty third minute when he again broke through and although the keeper saved the first effort, he managed to fire home the rebound. Ballybofey’s decision to play the match in Finn View with a bumpy pitch rather than the better surface of the Finn Valley pitch backfired. Michael O Brien and Mark Doherty were in complete control in defence with Bradley and Melaugh doing a similar job in midfield. The nearest the home side came was when Brendan O Meara somehow managed to punch the ball off the line when it looked a sure goal and although Ballybofey pleaded that the ball was over the line, referee Victor Rooney was spot on in allowing the play to continue. Man of the match: Shane Barclay.

19021011: Rafferty volley rescues Curragh in six goal thriller

Cappry Rovers   3              Curragh Athletic    3

Played under the floodlights at Cappry Park, both sides played out a 3 -3 draw in what was a very entertaining game. Curragh opened the scoring on eleven minutes when Jason Sweeney was taken down and the same player made no mistake with a twice taken penalty. Malachy Martin then equalised for the home side before Renato drilled home to give Curragh the lead again. But the home side hit back again to lead at the break with goals from Martin and PJ Gallagher. Curragh regrouped at the break and produced a very good second half performance with Kevin Rafferty volleying home an unstoppable and deserved equaliser after Jason Sweeney’s shot rebounded off the keeper on fifty four minutes. Curragh were now well in command and would have went into the lead but for some fine saves by Patton in the Cappry nets, particularly from Sweeney, Doherty and Rafferty. However, stand in keeper Shane O Brien also pulled of a great save for Curragh in the final minutes with his brother Michael O Brien also clearing the ball off the line. In between Jason Sweeney also saw his shot turned onto the post by Patton. Best for Curragh was Kevin Rafferty.

15022011: Saturday evening kick off against Cappry

Curragh’s away match against Cappry Rovers  next weekend has been brought forward to Saturday evening with a 6.15pm kick off.

060211:  Away defeat for under strength Curragh

Curragh suffered a bit of a drubbing on Sunday last when they went down by five goals to nil at the hands of table toppers Eany Celtic. Although, Sean Carlin was down five players from the previous week, he managed to put out a strong panel and but for some poor defending, they really could of came out of this game with something. For thirty minutes, Curragh were on top, but conceded two easy goals before the break and as they tried to recover, they kept getting caught out at the rear.

Justin Mc Bride scored there 4th goal direct from a corner before Ethan o donnell made it 5 before half time with another good strike. Mathew Carlin scored number 6 from a direct free kick, before James Carlin wrapped it up with goal number 7 with yet another great strike..It was a good team performance.

30012011: Late Rafferty goal gives Curragh deserved share of points.

St Catherines     1              Curragh Athletic FC         1

A Kevin Rafferty header on eighty nine minutes rescued a point for Curragh in Killybegs. Curragh trailed from a close range header mid way through the first half. St Catherines who knocked us out of the cup at the same venue before the Christmas break, settled better for the first half hour, but as the half went on, Curragh began to find their form and in the second half pressurised the home team for most of the half. The home keeper looked to have ensured victory with some fine saves, especially when he somehow turned a fantastic free kick from Brendan Boyle around the post. But credit to Curragh who never gave up and indeed Rafferty and Jason Sweeney were unlucky on three occasions. Just as the game entered the final minutes, Curragh were awarded another corner and Rafferty thundered a header to the back of the net for a deserved equaliser.

23012011: Setback for Curragh in Derrybeg

Dunlewey Celtic 1 Curragh Athletic 0

Curragh paid the price for missing some good chances when the lost one nil in a reversed fixture played in Derrybeg. The team trailed from a first half goal at the break, but threw everything they had at the home team in the second half, only to be thwarted by some excellent saves from the home keeper Joey Rodden. However, Jason Sweeney, Kevin Rafferty and Damian Duffy could have scored but were unlucky not to get the ball in the net when they seemed destined to score. Next week the team travel to play St Catherines in Killybegs.

16012011: Curragh in control with 5 – 1 home victory

Curragh Athletic               5              Glenree Utd      1

Curragh came back with all cylinders firing from the long break with a well deserved win over Glenree Utd in Killygordon. An almost full squad was a good boost for Sean Carlin’s team and from the time Jason Sweeney intercepted a back pass and rounded the keeper to score on seven minutes, Curragh always looked in control of this match. However, although Calvin Bradley then rattled the post. as time moved on Curragh missed several good chances to increase the lead until just on the stroke of half time, when Shane Barclay scored a fantastic individual goal, dribbling past several defenders before side footing the ball wide of the keeper and into the net off the inside of the post. Two nil at the break, and it was three on fifty one minutes when Damian Duffy scored following good work from Calvin Bradley. It got worse for Glenree three minutes later when man of the match Calvin Bradley collected the ball deep into his own half and raced away before seeing his shot saved by the keeper. But on hand Damian Duffy was there to slid home the rebound to make it four. Substitute Brendan Mc Gee then scored following a goal mouth scramble on eighty one minutes, but four minutes later Kevin Rafferty scored a deserved goal to seal the victory. Glenree had good performances from their keeper Seaghan Mc Clafferty, Daniel Mc Gruddy and Patrick Mc Gruddy, but they never got going as a team. Curragh will be glad to get back to action and had good performers in Calvin Bradley, Kevin Rafferty, Brendan Boyle. Referee:  Liam Farren

Curragh row out of Fai Junior Cup

12122010: St Catherines 2  Curragh Athletic 1

Curragh exited the Fai Junior Cup on Sunday when St Catherine's claimed a 2 – 1 victory at home in Killybegs. The game was a very even game and given the fact that Curragh traveled short some of their key players, the players put in a fine performance and it must be said deserved something from this game. Two down after only fifteen minutes following a deflection and a direct free kick, the away team responded well with Jason Sweeney pulling a goal back from the spot midway through the first half. Curragh dominated for long periods but lacked the scoring touch in front of goal.

Sweeney goal enough to keep Curragh in hunt.

21112010: Drumoghill Celtic 0 Curragh Athletic 1

Curragh produced a fine performance to record a great away win over table toppers Drumoghill Celtic. This was a must win game for Curragh with their opponents sitting top of the table. The victory was no more that Curragh deserved and but for three fine saves by the home keeper, the margin could have bigger. Brendan Boyle saw his forth minute low shot turned round the post, Jason Sweeney then ran past three defenders to get one on one, but again the keeper saved. A great move then on sixty two minutes saw a Chris Burns cross headed just past the post by Kevin Rafferty. However, Curragh also has Brendan O Meara to thank when a Drumoghill shot hit the inside of the post and he saved well as the ball ran across the goal line. Then on seventy eight minutes a good pass from Ryan Kelly put Brendan Boyle through on goal, but he was taking down and looked a certain penalty, but the referee adjudged that the foul was committed outside. However, from the resulting free, Jason Sweeney stepped up to curl a delightful free kick into the top corner and out of the reach of the despairing keeper O Donnell. It was no more than Sean Carlin’s men deserved and two minutes later it could have been all over, but again the keeper saved at the feet of Sweeney when he was again one on one. This was a game that Curragh looked comfortable throughout, however, it took a brilliant free kick from a top marksman to win this match. Curragh now take a break from the League and travel to Killybegs next Sunday (1.30pm) to take on St Catherines in the 4th Round of the FAI Junior Cup.

07112010: Boyle brace seals Cup victory for Curragh

Curragh Athletic 4 Downtown Utd 2

Two brilliant goals from Brendan Boyle sent Curragh through the 4th round of the Fai Junior Cup. His  first, a curling shot three minutes into the second half put Curragh in command and his second a candidate for goal of the season when he thumbed home a clearance from the keeper from thirty five yards out. But the home side did have it all their own way and needed goals from Jason Sweeney and Kevin Rafferty to seal the victory. (see match report seniors)

05112010: Fai Junior Cup on Sunday

Curragh take a break from the league this weekend when they entertain Saturday League team Downtown Utd in the third round of the Fai Junior Cup (KO 1.30pm). The last time the sides met was in the Downtown Cup final in 1994 when Curragh came out on top in a 3 – 1 victory.

31102010:       Good away point gets Curragh back on track.

Glenree Utd    1          Curragh Athletic         1
A good result away to last year’s runners up Glenree Utd got Curragh back on track again after the previous week’s home defeat. However, Curragh will be disappointed at not having taking all three points. During the game they produced several good chances only to be thwarted by the keeper who ended up man of the match. Jason Sweeney had put Curragh ahead on ten minutes when he lobbed the keeper. Kevin Rafferty then rattled the post and both Sweeney and himself almost made it two. Glenree Utd equalised on the stroke of half-time. The second half saw Curragh again dominate and in the last few minutes could of win it when Brendan Boyle’s shot came down of the crossbar and was cleared and on the final whistle Sweeney saw his six yard shot again saved by the keeper when it looked a certain chance.

24102010: Curragh’s run ended by Castlefin Celtic

Curragh Athletic 0      Castlefin Celtic 1

Curragh’s good run in the league was halted when neighbours Castlefin Celtic went away with a one nil victory from Killygordon. Curragh never seemed to get in the right lane for this game and although they managed to put sustained pressure on Castlefin, it was Ronan Tourish’s goal just after the break that sealed the points for Castlefin.

03102010: Curragh Athletic 8    Cappry Rovers          1

In what was expected to be a very close derby, Curragh produced their best display of the season to completely outclass a star studded Cappry Rovers side. Curragh produced what can only be described as tremendous display of passing and scoring which left Cappry completely outclassed on the day. In a week when the team received generous sponsorship of a new kit from “The G Barbers, Donegal Street, Ballybofey, it was fitting that the players should turn in such a tremendous display with their debutant new kit. 20/09/2010: Another good away win in South Donegal.

Letterbarrow Celtic 2           Curragh Athletic 4 (aet)

Curragh produced their second away win in the trot in South Donegal with a hard earned victory after extra time in the FAI Junior Cup. This time it was Letterbarrow Celtic whose home pitch is located at Tymeen in the Bluestacks, where the League Trophy was captured back in May 2010. However, this time it was much harder game for Sean Carlin’s team, with Shane Bradley (2), Brendan Boyle and Jason Sweeney getting the goals in a 4 – 2 win. The game ended 2- 2 each at full time with Curragh coming from behind twice to equalise, the second coming from Boyle with fifteen minutes remaining. However, Sweeney and Barclay ensured victory with two well taken extra time goals.

Danny "Bomber" Rouse RIP

22/08/2010: Sudden death of Bomber Rouse:

The community of Curragh were shocked and saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Curragh legend Danny "Bomber" Rouse at the weekend. Danny always had close links to the club from when he was a prolific goal scorer in the seventies until his sudden death. When the club won their first trophy in 1974, with a 3-2 away win in Letterkenny against Arcade, Danny had scored 35 goals that year and still holds the overall goals record scored for the club with 142 goals. He later went on to manage the team from 1974 to 1977 and again later when the club played in the Ulster Senior League in the early nineties. The club wish to offer their sincerest sympathy to his wife Eileen and family at this very sad time.

In a game where Curragh went all out from the start, and had numerous attemps on goal before Gerard Melaugh opened the scoring after sixteen minutes with a thumping shot from outside the eighteen which flew into the net off a post. The second goal arriverd on twenty four minutes when Kevin Rafferty was fouled in the box and Jason Sweeney made it 2-0. It was 3 - 0 on forty one minutes when Sweeney rose high at the back post to head a great goal from a Calvin Bradley cross. Jason completed his hatrick near the end of the game when he rounded the keeper before scoring from a narrow angle. 2/4/2010: Stage set for International at Curragh

The Republic of Ireland School International game between Ireland and Scotland (Girls) will be played at the Curragh on Sunday 25th April 2010. The announcement follows a visit to the ground today by Alex Harkin, FAI Schools representative and representatives of the Scottish Schools Football Association. Speaking after the announcement, Frank Kelly, Club Chairman, said that the club were delighted with the news and are in deed very proud to host such an important match.

"I met Alex one evening a few weeks back and he told me then that they were looking at the possibility of having the match played here and would have another look at our set-up when his Scottish counterparts came over for a look around. The recent completion of the seated Spectator Stand has just about finished off the grounds, so this will be another good day for the Club to show what we have achieved over the last few years. Alex has already asked us to host a few Schools finals in the past and we were more than happy to accommodate him. Its great that we have a local representative of the FAI Schools so close and on behalf of everyone here, I would like to thank Alex for helping to get the fixture played here".

1.00 PM Kick Off on Sunday

Sundays Donegal Football League match at home to Arranmore has a i.00pm kickoff. Manager Shaun Carlin will be hoping his side can move a step closer to the title with a home win. 14/3/2010: Curragh move back top with two matches remaining.

Whitestrand 1 Curragh Athletic 2

Curragh moved back top of the league again thanks to a hard earned but well deserved win along the Atlantic Drive. A fantastic 25 yard free kick by Brendan Boyle three minutes into the second half set up the win and and Mark Doherty added a second with twenty minutes remaining. The game was played in very windy conditions which made it difficult to play football particularly playing with the wind. The first half saw both Duffy and Boyle go close for Curragh, but there were few changes in that half. However, Curragh produced just what Shaun Carlin asked of them in the second half and when Boyle put them ahead, they never looked in danger. Although the home team scored from a penalty in the dying seconds, Curragh produced a fine second half performance and indeed could have won by a bigger margin in the end. Curragh now are at home to Arranmore next weekend and will be looking to extend their lead with another win. Best for Curragh was Burns, Boyle and O Brien at the back, Savlon, Duffy and Bradley in midfield with Doherty and Kelly up front always looking dangerous.

Best wishes go to Kevin Rafferty and his new bride who got married yesterday in Letterkenny.

8/3/2010: Curragh draw away with Kerrykeel

Kerrykeel 1 Curragh Athletic 1

For the second week in succession, Curragh drew one goal each. Although this draw sees us move off the top spot, the team are five points ahead of third spot, but more importantly only a point behind the leaders Glenree with a game in hand. A goal after thirty minutes by Mark Doherty put Curragh ahead, but the home team managed to equalise with only ten minutes remaining. It would be fair to say that a draw was a fair result on the day with Kerrykeel needing to beat Curragh to have any change of winning the league. But they are still in with a shout of promotion and Curragh will hope they do us favor next week when the entertain Rathmullen Celtic. This was a hard game and although Curragh dominated around midfield in the first half, Brendan O Meara had to be at his best to save twice early on. The second half saw Kerrykeel come at Curragh more, but although it ended all square, Curragh will be the happier team having avoided defeat.

23/10/2009: Proud night for Curragh Committee Inter-provincial at Curragh Ground

In the first ever Inter-provincial game to be played here, Leinster defeated Munster 2-0 under floodlights at the Curragh tonight. Two first-half goals were enough to see off an unimpressive Munster side who did come into the game more in the second half. Among the attendance was Sean Mc Cafferty, Youth Fai International manager. Credit to all involved in Curragh and in particular Fas who made great work in getting the Seats and Ground works completed in time for the big match. A special thanks also to the ladies committee.  Well done to all involved.

Curragh earned a good away point in Rathmullen thanks to a well deserved one all draw. However, having gone down to 10 men with twenty minutes remaining, we were maybe happy with the draw. The team have no game next week.
