Christmas 2011 sees Curragh well placed in seniors

Senior: Christmas 2011 sees Curragh move into the top four for the first time this season following their one nil away victory with Gweedore Utd recently. This is a good achievement for Sean Carlin and his players following their shaky start to the league campaign. Reaching the area final of the Sportsman’s Cup was another good achievement and the team now go into 2012 challenging for promotion.

The under 16 team completed a double over our neighbours winning 3 – 1 in the league and they followed this up with a 2 – 1 victory in the Cup. The under 12 managed a credible 2 – 2 draw in Convoy and not to be outdone, our seniors recorded a good 4 – 2 win today.

The late Mickey O Brien back in October 2009 during work on the installation and completion of the Spectator Stand

Curragh saddened by death of Club Member Mickey O Brien

Mickey was an active member of the club for years when during that time he was a committee member as well as having managed both Saturday and Sunday teams and the under 16 team.

Popular with the players and teams, he always wanted them to do well, and although he was unable to attend

the final few matches that saw Curragh win the league title, it meant a lot to him that his son Michael as captain, lifted the league trophy in Letterbarrow after the final game only a few weeks back. That evening both he and the team made a special effort to get together and spent some time with Mickey holding the cup with the entire team in and around the grounds where he had did so much work for the club.

But it was also his contribution to the community and the Curragh Football Club from his position with Fas that Mickey will best be remembered. During that time he managed with his team to contribute immensely to the improved infrastructure around the area, not only at the Football Club, but to all clubs and organisations in the area.

The committee and players of the club who conducted a "Guard of Honour" during the funeral service, wish to offer their sincerest sympathy to the Brien family at this very sad time.

25/4/2010: Republic of Ireland 3-0 Scotland

Gemma McGuinness (2), Katie McCabe (3), Amber Barrett (45)

Following on from the tremendous success of winning the Bob Docherty Cup last week, the Republic of Ireland U15 Girls Schools team celebrated yet another victory with a comprehensive win over Scotland with a hat trick of goals in an invitational friendly yesterday which was hosted by Curragh Athletic FC in Killygordon.

On the score sheet for the Republic of Ireland were the Donegal pairing of Gemma McGuinness (Moville CC) and Amber Barrett (Loreto CS, Milford) as well as the impressive Katie McCabe (St. Paul's SS, Greenhills).

Ireland were without the services of U17 International Clare Shine and Mount Mercy College student Ciara O'Connell as injury ruled both players out. However Manager, Michael Gallagher had drafted in Tipperary star Edel O'Dwyer and Letterkenny's Lauren Harper into the Irish set up for the final game of the season.

Captained by St. Kilian's student Chloe Mustaki, the Irish team made a perfect start to the campaign with a goal in the first 90 seconds. Mustaki played a pivotal role in the build up to the first goal with a long ball out of defence for McGuinness to run onto. The local girl made a blistering run forward and cut into the centre and struck a lovely shot to the bottom corner. Megan Cunningham was beaten for pace as the ball flew past the diving keepers right.

A minute later, the home side extended their lead as the Irish were awarded a penalty after Katie McCabe was impeded enroute to goal. The Tallaght youngster stepped up to take the spot kick and made no mistake as she slotted past Cunningham for Ireland's second of the afternoon.

McGuinness and McCabe were causing all sorts of problems for the visitors early on as Nicole McPhee, Kathryn Pender and Mary Claire Steele were under pressure in the Scots half.

It's a testament to the Irish defence that they only conceded once in four games and this was evident as Scotland tried in vain to get back into the game.

Nicole Cranny had a quiet quarter for the Irish between the posts as Vice Captain Shauna Newman, Amy O'Connor, Carys Johnson and Aine Bennett averted any attack on goal.

Bennett had in fact secured an All Ireland GAA medal 24 hours previously as Eureka Secondary School in Kells were crowned All Ireland Junior B Schools Champions having beaten Ulster Champions St. Paul's Bessbrook in the Gaelic Grounds, Drogheda.

The visitors got a foothold on proceedings on the half hour mark and Eve Hunter was unlucky not to get one back for the tartan army before half time, her shot just wide of the mark.

After the interval, Scotland started the brighter and Caroline Richardson played a near perfect pass to Rachel Malcahy down the left wing. The striker blasted the ball inches past the post much to the relief of Laois keeper Nicole Cranny.

Ireland responded moments later as Mustaki played a high ball over the top for Longford star Aoife Darcy to connect with. The Mean Scoil Mhuire student lobbed substitute keeper Anna Vincent from distance but Darcy was unlucky to see her effort float over the crossbar.

Ireland's third goal of the afternoon came ten minutes in with the imposing figure of Emily Cahill who dominated much of Ireland's midfield possession, turning supplier as she executed a great ball in space. Striker Amber Barrett was first to react and made a dazzling run past two defenders to smack the ball into the top corner.

The three goal cushion saw Manager, Michael Gallagher awarded the opportunity to play all his players as they implemented a roll on, roll off substitution system. Niamh Kelly (St Louis CC), goalkeeper Richelle Timothy (Castlerea CS), Edel O'Dwyer (Presentation SS) and Keara Cormican (Presentation College, Athenry) were introduced.

Midway through the second half, Scotland's Laura Pickington made a great run into the box but her strike could only rattle the side netting.

Moyne student, Michelle Farrell played in Niamh Kelly shortly after her introduction but the chance evaded her as Countney McAvoy intercepted the ball at the crucial moment to spare Scotland's blushes.

Sarah Rowe and Keara Cormican linked well to feed the ball through for Aisling Reynolds but she couldn't connect as the ball shot agonizing past the right post.

In the dying minutes of injury time, new recruit Lauren Harper was unfortunate not to register a score as her effort sailed over the upright.

There was jubilant scenes after the game, as Ireland maintained their unbeaten run. Manager, Michael Gallagher was on hand to thank the girls and their families for the enormous contribution they demonstrated throughout the season and it was great for the team to end on a high. Gallagher stated, "The Scottish team are an excellent footballing side and we knew going into the match that it would be a battle. We only secured the Bob Docherty Cup with a 1-0 win against Scotland last week so we knew they would be up for the challenge today. It's great to end our season with a win and I'm delighted for the girls".

Moville teacher, Margaret Mulhall who is Assistant Manager was delighted with the team's performance, she insisted, "the girls were excellent today and we were fortunate enough to be given the opportunity for all players to contribute to today's success. It's a great honour for the girls to represent their schools at International level and something they will never forget".

It has been a remarkable few days for girls' soccer in Ireland. Coach Dave Collins injected, "The FAI Women's U17s have demonstrated the high standard in women's football in this country with an historic victory over Sweden on the same day that our U15's won the Bob Docherty Cup. The majority of that U17's panel came through the Schools system which is a great advertisement of the work we do at Schools level. The girls are given their first taste of International football with us and we are delighted to see so many players maintain their high standards of football by securing a place on Noel King's team. We have no doubt that some of our U15 stars featured today will follow in the footsteps of Dora Gorman, Rebecca Kearney, Tanya Kennedy, Ciara Grant and Aileen Gilroy to name but a few".

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND U15's: Nicole Cranny (Heywood Community School), Aine Bennett (Eureka Secondary School, Kells), Chloe Mustaki (St. Kilian's Deutsche Schule), Emily Cahill (Newpark Comprehensive School), Shauna Newman (St Oliver's Community College), Carys Johnson (Colaiste Muire, Buttevant), Sarah Rowe (St. Mary's Secondary School, Ballina), Aisling Reynolds (Mean Scoil Mhuire, Longford), Niamh Kelly (St Louis Community College), Michelle Farrell (Moyne Community School), Katie McCabe (St. Paul's Secondary School, Greenhills), Ciara O'Connell (Mount Mercy College), Keara Cormican (Presentation College, Athenry), Gemma McGuinness (Moville Community College), Aoife Darcy (Mean Scoil Mhuire), Richelle Timothy (Castlerea Community School), Amber Barrett (Loreto Community School, Milford), Amy O'Connor (St. Vincent's Secondary School, Cork), Edel O'Dwyer (Presentation Secondary School), Lauren Harper (Loreto Secondary School, Donegal).

MANAGEMENT TEAM: Manager: Michael Gallagher, St. Joseph's College, Summerhill, Athlone, Assistant Manager: Margaret Mulhall, Moville Community School, Coach: Dave Collins, Alexandra College, Dublin, GK Coach: Ian Carry, Physio: David Kieran, Team Doctor: Dr. Tom Boyce.

Curragh Athletic FC under 14 team prior to their match with Cappry Rovers Reserves (28/1/2009)

14/3/2009: Drumkeen Utd 0 Curragh Athletic FC 7

Curragh produced a tremendous away victory in Drumkeen to ensure qualification for

the prestigious Donegal Champions League and also complete their league campaign unbeaten. In fact, it took only three minutes to register their first when a long kick out from Marty Mullen found Gary Kelly who then played in Ethen Lafferty to beat the keeper at the near post. It was two nil on eight minutes when Gary Kelly himself controlled and fired home an unstoppable shot. Conor Gallen then made it 3 - 0 on sixteen minutes. Curragh at this stage were in complete control and after the break continued the rout. However, their fourth goal was a bizarre one when Rian French kicked the ball back to the Drumkeen keeper following a injury stoppage and somehow the home keeper managed to let the ball into the net. After this Conor Gallen produced two thunderous shots to complete his hat-trick and French added another before the end. Congratulation to all the team and management on a great campaign. A draw or win on Thursday night by Kildrum Tigers against Ballybofey could still see Curragh crowned Champions.

13/2/2009: Donegal League

Curragh Athletic 2     Deele Harps 2
Friday night saw Curragh produce possible their best display of the season to hold second placed Deele Harps in a two all draw under the floodlights at Killygordon. Although it took a goal from Brendan Boyle on eighty three minutes to rescue a point for the home side, it was no more than they deserved. Michael Coyle opened the scoring on twenty eight minutes for Curragh with a low drive from just outside the box and looked in control at the break when they lead one nil. However, Deele came out the second half and upped the tempo and they saw Conor Catterson equalize from close in on fifty seven minutes. They then grabbed the lead on sixty six minutes when Adrian Gallagher drilled the ball home from twenty five yards out. But Curragh again responded and deserved to equalize and in fact almost snatched victory in the last seconds when a deflected shot just crept past the post. Best for Curragh was Mullen, O Brien and Boyle with Gallagher having a good game for Deele, Referee: Ed Moore.

28/1/2009: Underage Result

Curragh 16 Cappry Rovers Res 0

Curragh had an easy victory under the floodlights tonight in what turned out to be somewhat of a mismatch. Played under good weather conditions, the home team were two up after only six minutes and the goals continued from there on. Caolan Grant grabbed two either side of the break, with Colm Melaugh and Rian French each getting themselves a hat-trick. Other scorers for Curragh on the night were Ronan Gallen, Shane Gallager, Conor Gallen, Mathew Carlin, Pauric Mc Menamin and James Carlin. Another win for Curragh gives them maximum points from four games, but it must be said that the remaining matches will be allot tougher. Credit also to the Cappry Rovers players, many who are eligible to play for another two years at this age.

24/1/2009 Good away win for under 14's

Ballybofey Utd 0 Curragh Athletic FC 3

A goal each from Luke and Gary Kelly and another from Rian French gave Curragh a very impressive away victory in Ballybofey. Although missing Ronan Gallen who was on county duty with Donegal Schoolboys in Sligo and Colm Melaugh who had an accident on his way to the match, Curragh played probably their best football to date. However, although they dominated play in the first half, all their efforts on goal were denied by some last-ditch defending and in particular some fine goal keeping for the home keeper. But they remained committed to playing football and it eventually paid off when Luke Kelly finished off an excellent move by smashing home from just inside the six yard box. One nil at the break and two minutes into the second half Gary Kelly made it two nil when he collected a rebounded shot and smartly finished to the bottom corner. After this Manager Eunan Brolly introduced two under 12 players, firstly Mathew Carlin on the left hand side and then James Carlin at right back. They continued to dominate and although Ballybofey defended strongly, a deserved third goal did arrive when Kieran French smashed home from close range. A good team effort again for Curragh with Caolan Grant and the Gallen Brothers dominant for Curragh. Next game is home to Cappry Rovers on 31/1/2009.

15/1/2009: Good start to u14 Campaign.

Curragh under 14 team got off to the best possible start with two wins on the trot. Having beaten Raphoe Town with a scorline of 5 goals to 1 on the opening day, they followed this up with well deserved 3 - 1 scorline under the floodlights at Curragh against Seamus Lafferty's team. Although, Curragh deserved the win, Castlefin Celtic made them fight all the way with Curragh only scoring their third in the last seconds of the game. Curragh would like to thank Castlefin for agreeing to reverse the fixture.

Donegal Football League 29/11/2009:

Curragh Athletic 0     Bonagee Utd 1

Played on a cold Friday night under the floodlights in Killygordon, Bonagee Utd came away with all three points thanks to a well taken goal by Glen Gallagher on eighteen minutes. For the second game in a row the home team tried hard but were unable to make the break against a well organised Bonagee who had Damian Mc Clafferty as their man of the match. The first half saw Conor Devine narrowly miss at the back post for Curragh and Shane Houlin saw his effort brilliantly turned over by Brendan O Meara in nets for the home team. As the half wore on, it was Curragh who created most of the running, but they were unable to get vital breakthrough. The second half was a very even contest with Sweeney and Devine missing the target for Curragh and Shane Gallagher having good efforts for Bonagee. The best chance fell to Jason Sweeney on fifty eight minutes when following a free kick from Michael O Brien, he only managed to head into the keepers arms. Next up for Curragh is a another home fixture against neighbours Ballybofey Utd on Friday night Kick off 8.00pm.
Referee: Liam Farren

23/11/2008: Curragh Athletic        0          Rathmullen Celtic      2

Played under poor weather condition in Killygordon, the home team have only themselves to blame after a series of missed chances allowed Rathmullen Celtic grab all three points. Curragh opened brightly and Gary Doherty had two efforts saved by the keeper. Jason Sweeney and Tom Mullen also could of scored before man of the match for Rathmullen, Niall Doherty ran past the Curragh defence before crossing to Paul Morrisson who pushed the ball into an empty net on twenty eight minutes. The second half continued as the first with Curragh again having the best chances. Sweeney again had a good chance and Michael Coyle was unlucky to see his shot fly past the near post on sixty six minutes. The same player had a good chance a minute later but his lob also went the wrong side of the post. As  Curragh began to press more, the best chance of the game saw Patrick O Brien somehow send his shot wide on seventy four minutes from only five yards out. The missed chances proved costly in the eighty fourth minute when Rathmullen doubled their lead after Niall Doherty scored from a free kick. Rathmullens man of the match was Niall Doherty while Boyle, Coyle and Bradley trine hard for Curragh.

Referee: Brian O Kane

18/10/2008 Donegal League: Whitestrand Utd         0          Curragh Athletic        2
Curragh Athletic finally got their season up and going with a well deserved victory over Whitestrand in a game that was reverved to Curragh and played under the new floodlights. It would be fair to say that the home team made heavy weather of the win particularly in the second half when they missed several goal scoring chances to take the lead. But they never stopped trying throughout. In defense, Coyle and Boyle looked very solid with Kevin Melaugh and Mc Menamin working hard in midfield. Up front Conor (frankie) Devine went close with many attemps and Tom Mullin never stopped running. The deadlock was finally broken in the 75fifth minute when substitute young Calvin Bradley's pass split open the Strand defence, referee Tara Catterson had no option but award the home team a penalty. Up stepped Conor Devine to slot home from the penalty spot beating Kelly well with a low shot to the keppers right. Indeed Curragh should have added further goals with Devine unlucky on at least two occasions not to score. However, the points were sealed on eighty eight minutes when midfielder Michael Mc Menamin got possession just just over the half way line and raced through to score a great individual goal beating Kelly again with a low shot to his right. Whitestrand, tried to create their own chances and were unlucky on a few occasions particularly when a free kick was not dealt with by the home keeper and ended up hitting the bar. But it was Curragh who were the more determined and created the most openings and only for some fine saves by Paddy Kelly in nets, this game could have been settled much earlier. Best for Whitestrand was Martin and Kelly. Overall this was a gutsy performance from Curragh and if this continues, then we should look forward to some good matches under the floodlights. Man of the match for Curragh was Conor Devine

19/9/2008 Fai Junior Cup

Curragh Athletic        1          Redcastle 3
Two late goals ensured that Redcastle from the Inishowen League progressed to the next round of the Fai Junior Cup at the expense of Curragh. Although the home team produced a much better performance than in recent games, the Inishowen outfit produced a much disciplined performance. Redcastle opened their account in the fourteenth minute when a deep cross from the left was not dealt with and Michael Havlin stabbed home the opening goal. Curragh quickly responded and Melaugh and Sweeney having good efforts. As the game wore on, it was the home team who were in the ascendancy and deservedly equalized on sixty six minutes when Jason Sweeney lobbed the keeper for a delightful goal. However, as Curragh looked for a winner, it was Redcastle who again took the lead goal on seventy eight minutes when a shot from Mc Laughlin found the back of the net. The Inishowen side wrapped up the game on eight five minutes with another goal from Havlin. There was some very good performances from the home team, especially O Brien, Coyle, Melaugh and Devine. Ref: Donal Mc Cafferty.

New Floodlights -

12/9/2008: Curragh Athletic v Castlefin Celtic under Floodlight.
Curragh Athletic        3          Castlefin Celtic          4

Although, the night belonged to Curragh Athletic and their committee, the activities on the pitch fell somewhat short of the off the pitch developments. Castlefin Celtic collected all three points with a four goals to three score line. From the off, Curragh seemed a bit overwhelmed by the occasion and found themselves two nil down at the break.

But for young Shane O Brien in nets, Curragh could have been in trouble very early on. However, just it when it looked that they had got to grips with the occasion, their defence was caught flat-footed and Troy Mc Cormack scored. Two minutes later, it was two nil.  Referee Paddy Duffy awarded what looked a very harsh penalty and although the home keeper again made a tremendous save from Cormack O Brien, Troy Mc Cormack was first to react and slot home the rebound. It would be fair to say that the home team had ample chances, with Mullen and Sweeney missing the target. Curragh did get on the scoreline in second half through Gerard Melaugh and Conor Devine, but two further further goals from O Brien and Mc Cormack sealed the points for Castlefin, even though a tremendous goal from Jason Sweeney saw the away team having to hang on a bit near the end.

All credit again to the committee on this marvelous night for junior soccer and credit to the ladies committee who provided the nice food afterwards in the club rooms.

7/9/2008: Curragh get home draw against Redcasle FC in Fai Junior Cup. Date and time to be confirmed for week ending 21/9/2008.
