General Profile of the Club
Formed in 1971 and situated in East Donegal just off the N15, Curragh Athletic FC was one of the founder members of the “Donegal League”. For the first thirty years, the club played their home matches at Crossroads, when they won their first trophy in 1974, clinching the Div.2 title with a 3-2 away win in Letterkenny against Arcade now known as Bonagee United. The club enjoyed much success in these early years and the Crossroads venue will also be remembered for the then famous “Curragh Summer Cup”.
Curragh celebrated the 25th Anniversary in the
Donegal Football League in 1996.

In the early nineties, the club enjoyed success again winning the Division One of the League and also winning the “Downtown Cup”. But it was off the field that a major event took place and which was to shape the future direction of the club.
The committee in their quest to own their own home, and after several attempts to acquire land locally, finally agreed terms with a local farmer. Although, the land was far from suitable for playing football, plans were drawn and planning permission for the new development was granted for the complex. The development would not have been possible without the support of the community including many local farmers and contractors who gave their time and machinery many times free of charge. Many fundraising events took place and many fond memories still exist of those popular social club events not least the popular “Tennents Talent Competition” ran annually in the then “Bakers Corner” in Killygordon. Other events included sponsored walks and cycles as the by now famous “20 trips to the European Championships in Germany” where among the ticked holders was some famous people including well known Everton and Republic of Ireland player, Kevin Sheedy. The final draw was held in the Bakers Corner, where Finn Harps all-time leading goal scorer, the great Brendan Bradley drew the winning tickets.
Today the club is based at their new ground across the River Finn in Killygordon and is affiliated to the Donegal Football League, the East Donegal Underage Soccer League and the Donegal Schoolboys League. The acquisition of land in 1994 and the subsequent completion of fifteen-year capital ground- development plan costing €1M was a milestone in the history of this small club. It has given the club and its community a sense of incredible achievement. The excellent facilities which have been admired at all levels in football, has over the last few years been matched with similar success on the field of play both at senior and schoolboy level.
