April 2011: Curragh Athletic under-14 team who beat Cappry Rovers in the Donegal Schoolboys East Cup Final .
Cappry Rovers 1 Curragh Athletic 2
Two magnificent second half goals proved decisive for Jonny Mc Brides under 14 team when they captured the under 14 Cup in Convoy. It was no more than this young team deserved, having falling behind against the run of play in the first half. In a game full of commitment and skill, Curragh were quick off the mark with Dylan Quinn, Jonny Carlin, Justin Mc Bride and Ronan Curtis all having good efforts on goal. But a long ball over the Curragh defence allowed Cappry to grab the lead on twenty one minutes. Not to be outdone, Curragh came out all guns blazing in the second half, and within three minutes the teams were level. Having forced a corner, Jonny Carlin sent in a good corner to the back post where Dylan Quinn gave the Cappry keeper no chance with a brilliant header to the top corner of the net. From here on, it was Curragh who looked the more dangerous team and the one more likely to win it and that’s exactly what happened. With eight minutes remaining, a great move involving four players ended up with the ball at the feet of Dylan Irwin who sent an unstopable shot to the far corner of the net. In the remaining minutes Cappry tried in vain to recover, but the very impressive Liam O Meara in nets and man of the match Stephen Mc Menamin dealt decisively with any treat that came their way. Well done to all involved.

DEELE HARPS 1 CURRAGH ATHLETIC 3
Two seasons ago these sides battled it out for the honours in the East Donegal Under-12 League. Curragh Athletic came out on top that year with the Lifford based side settling for the runners up spot. Two years ahead the pair met again at The Athletic Club Grounds in Lifford on Saturday last. This was to be the Curragh’s first match of the new season as postponements had wiped out their earlier fixtures. Deele had played one previous match going down to the only goal of the game when Convoy Arsenal visited the border town.
The Curagh side settled into the game first and created the first chances of note. On three minutes Dylan Quinn put Ethan O’ Donnell through but he pulled his shot wide across the Deele goals. A minute later Kevin Lynch looked to have cleared the danger from the Deele penalty area but Matthew Carlin picked up the loose ball only to watch as his shot from long range was tipped over the bar by the home keeper. Deele had their first opening after seven minutes play when Niall Brennan cleared the ball deep into the Curragh half and with Adam Kelly chasing the long ball Liam O’ Meara was quickly off his line to clear the danger. After eleven minutes Matthew Carlin and Dylan Quinn combined well on the Curragh left wing before Quinn crossed to the unmarked Justin Mc Bride who had taken up a good position in the box but his shot was well blocked down by the Deele sweeper Lynch. The home sweeper was having a busy spell and on fifteen minutes he did well to get back to clear the ball off the line when a goal looked certain after Ethan O’ Donnell had slipped the ball under the advancing keeper’s body. The Curragh attack were looking dangerous as they made another four or five chances before they finally took the lead. On twenty four minutes Matthew Carlin switched to the right wing and he played a perfect pass to his cousin James inside the Deele penalty area. The number seven took a single touch before firing an unstoppable shot past the home keeper.
Spectators of a neutral persuasion and Curragh fans alike could have been forgiven for thinking that Curragh would now go on to make their dominance count but Deele Harps had other ideas and on their next attack they won a penalty. Adam Kelly, who was to go on to have a very good game in the Deele frontline, took the spotkick and levelled the match as halftime approached. The same player almost clinched the lead just before the break but O’ Meara was again on hand to keep the scores level.
The second half was evenly balanced as both sides were now believing that they could win the match. Dylan Quinn headed over from an early corner and he had a couple of free kicks from about thirty yard which failed to trouble the Deele netminder. Kevin Lynch again had to make a goal-line clearance after Matthew Carlin had played O’Donnell into a good position. Adam Kelly shot wide at the other end following Jack Mahon’s neat flick which sent the centre forward into the clear. Kelly then found himself one on one with the Curregh keeper but O’Meara stood up well, and easily from a spectators viewpoint, saved the goalbound header. Justin Mc Bride was working hard in the middle for the Curragh and he played a few forward passes which the Deele defence did well to clear. He went on a run himself as the game entered the closing stages but the Deele left back diverted the danger. Just as a draw looked to be the likely outcome Curragh substitute Anthony Dillon won the ball from a Deele kick out and he calmly played in O’Donnell who took a touch before shooting past Hannigan. Matthew Carlin had the final say as he ran from the halfway line deep into the Deele box before firing past the home keeper. The game was played in a sporting manner and could have gone either way. Well done to both teams. Referee: Stephen O’ Donnell
